Fishing for shinko, which are baby ikanago sand eels, began in the Harima-nada Sea in Hyogo Prefecture on March 12. Shinko, about 6 centimeters in length, were landed, and eight baskets each carrying 25 kilograms of the baby fish were lined up. Kugini, simmered shinko in a sweet and salty seasoning, is a taste of spring from the Seto Inland Sea. However, the number of baby sand eels is decreasing due to the effects of global warming and other factors, and fishing ended on March 14 in order to conserve them. In Osaka Bay, fishing for the eels was canceled for the second year in a row.
