ST. MORITZ, Switzerland (Kyodo) -- Japan's Ikuma Horishima won gold in the men's moguls at the freestyle skiing world championships on Wednesday, while Hinako Tomitaka took silver in the women's event.
Horishima landed a cork 1440 with his second run in the final to best his Canadian rival and runner-up Mikael Kingsbury in St. Moritz, Switzerland, winning the discipline at the tournament for the second time. He previously won in 2017, capturing gold in dual moguls.
The 27-year-old, the only Japanese man to win at the tournament, now also has the most gold medals for Japan with a total of three, surpassing Aiko Uemura's two in the women's.
"It's really pleasing to win on a big stage like this," Horishima said. "Having gained experience at the World Cup, I know how hard it is to win."
Horishima, the moguls bronze medalist at the 2022 Winter Olympics, holds a Japan-record 22 World Cup wins, including four this season. He was the overall season champion last campaign.
Jung Dae Yoon of South Korea was third behind Horishima and Kingsbury on the day.
"There will definitely be pressure as the (worlds) champion a year before the Olympics," Horishima said with the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Games in sight. "I'll face it seriously and prepare well."
In the women's event, Tomitaka was the first Japanese runner-up since Miki Ito in 2013. Perrine Laffont of France won the gold, and Maia Schwinghammer of Canada was third.
