TOKYO (Kyodo) -- A huge volcanic eruption has been observed on the Indonesian island of Flores but no significant tidal anomalies have been recorded along the coasts of Japan or other countries, the Japanese weather agency said Friday.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, tsunami would not impact the Japanese archipelago after the eruption of Mt. Lewotobi at around 12:40 a.m. Friday, Japan time. The eruption caused a roughly 16,000-meter-high volcanic plume.
