MESA, Arizona (Kyodo) -- Chicago Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki hit a pair of solo home runs in a spring training game Saturday against the Colorado Rockies, while Boston Red Sox left fielder Masataka Yoshida is set to begin the season on the injured list with a shoulder issue.
Suzuki, batting second and playing left field, homered in the first and third innings before being replaced in the fourth. His second home run of the game and third of the spring cut the Rockies' lead to 4-2 at Sloan Park in Mesa, Arizona.
The 30-year-old Japanese went hitless in eight at-bats with four strikeouts in the two-game opening series in Tokyo earlier this week against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Cubs will resume regular-season play Thursday at the Arizona Diamondbacks' Chase Field.
The Red Sox made the decision on Yoshida on Saturday as he continues his recovery from right shoulder surgery last October.
The two-time batting champion of Japan's Pacific League with the Orix Buffaloes has been limited to designated hitter duties during spring training.
He went 1-for-3 with a single in the day's 14-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.
