TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks ended slightly lower Monday as investors refrained from buying due to uncertainty over U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff plans.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 68.57 points, or 0.18 percent, from Friday at 37,608.49. The broader Topix index finished 13.28 points, or 0.47 percent, lower at 2,790.88.
On the top-tier Prime Market, decliners were led by bank, machinery and iron and steel issues.
The U.S. dollar mostly traded in the upper 149 yen range in Tokyo, as Trump's apparent "flexibility" on his planned reciprocal tariffs went some way to tempering concern about their potential impact on the world's largest economy, dealers said.
At 5 p.m., the dollar fetched 149.63-65 yen, compared with 149.27-37 yen in New York and 149.31-33 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Friday.
The euro was quoted at $1.0839-0840 and 162.19-23 yen against $1.0805-0815 and 161.33-43 yen in New York and $1.0838-0839 and 161.83-87 yen in Tokyo late Friday afternoon.
The yield on the benchmark 10-year Japanese government bond ended at 1.540 percent, up 0.020 percentage point from Friday's close. The debt was sold tracking a rise in long-term U.S. Treasury yields on the tariff uncertainty.
The benchmark Nikkei opened slightly higher after U.S. media reported Sunday that sector-based tariffs, including those targeting auto and semiconductor imports, are unlikely to be imposed at the same time as Trump's reciprocal tariffs planned for April 2.
But stocks soon lost momentum as the market waited for an official announcement from the Trump administration that could allow for an assessment of the tariffs' potential impact on the global economy, brokers said.
"With respect to U.S. tariffs, we do not know the critical aspects, such as the items and countries to be targeted and how long they are going to last," said Kazuo Kamitani, a strategist at the Investment Content Department of Nomura Securities Co.
