Tokyo stocks open lower after Trump announcement on auto tariffs

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks opened lower Thursday, weighed down by selling of auto issues after U.S. President Donald Trump said he will impose an additional 25 percent tariff on all cars made outside his country next week.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 250.33 points, or 0.66 percent, from Wednesday to 37,776.96. The broader Topix index was down 10.60 points, or 0.38 percent, at 2,802.29.
On the top-tier Prime Market, decliners were led by transportation equipment, and nonferrous metal, and oil and coal product issues.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 150.45-47 yen compared with 150.53-63 yen in New York and 150.40-42 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The euro was quoted at $1.0740-0742 and 161.58-63 yen against $1.0747-0757 and 161.66-76 yen in New York and $1.0786-0787 and 162.23-27 yen in Tokyo late Wednesday afternoon.
