YANGON (Kyodo) -- Over 1,000 people have been confirmed killed with more than 2,300 others injured a day after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck central Myanmar, state media said Saturday.
The quake occurred in the early afternoon on Friday, striking at a depth of about 10 kilometers, with strong shaking near Myanmar's second-largest city of Mandalay, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The Japanese embassy in Myanmar said two Japanese nationals suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the city.
The quake also impacted neighboring Thailand and China.
In the Thai capital Bangkok, around 1,000 km from the epicenter, at least eight people were killed and more than 80 others are unaccounted for. Seven of the victims died when an under-construction high-rise building collapsed, Thai authorities said.
Myanmar junta chief Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing on Friday made a rare plea to the international community, saying the country welcomes assistance in the face of the possible widespread damage from the quake.
The United States, Russia and other countries and international bodies said they are ready to provide relief assistance to Myanmar or have already begun doing so.
