PHOENIX, Arizona (Kyodo) -- Shota Imanaga picked up his first win of the season by throwing seven innings of one-run ball as the Chicago Cubs edged the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3 on Saturday.
The Japanese left-hander, who pitched on Opening Day in Tokyo on March 18, allowed just three hits while striking out four and walked two at Chase Field in Phoenix.
Imanaga (1-0) allowed the D-backs to score first in the second inning but otherwise faced little threat.
"I faced a bases-loaded jam, so I feel like I managed to pick up the win when things could go either way," Imanaga said.
"When the manager (Craig Counsell) asked me if I was okay (to pitch into the seventh), I said, 'trust me.' I got through the seventh without disappointing him, so it was a good outing that would lead to my next start."
Kyle Tucker hit a tiebreaking two-run homer to give the Cubs a 3-1 lead in the fifth before Matt Shaw's first career home run made it 4-1 in the seventh.
At Dodger Stadium, Japanese rookie Roki Sasaki continued to struggle with his command, but the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied to beat the Detroit Tigers 7-3 to start the season with a 5-0 record.
The 23-year-old right-hander lasted only 1-2/3 innings after giving up two runs, both in the first, and walking four. He allowed three hits and struck out two.
Shohei Ohtani went hitless in two at-bats with a pair of walks and two runs scored. The reigning National League MVP had his first stolen base of the season.
Teoscar Hernandez gave the Dodgers the lead for good at 4-2 with a two-run double in the fifth. Freddie Freeman hit the first of the team's three home runs of the night.
