ZURICH (Kyodo) -- A special exhibit is being held at the FIFA Museum in Zurich to mark 44 years since the smash-hit Japanese football manga series "Captain Tsubasa" debuted.
The showcase within the "Football Fever" exhibition recognizes the "profound influence" of the manga, created by Yoichi Takahashi, on football culture, having "inspired generations of players and fans" worldwide, according to the museum.
The exhibit, which runs until Aug. 31, features items such as a national team jersey bearing the signature and illustration of Takahashi in celebration of 100 years of Japanese football, the original "Captain Tsubasa" manga series, and a ball dedicated to Tsubasa Ozora, the series' main character.
Visitors can also participate in an interactive gaming experience called "Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions."
Giovanni Marti, deputy head of communication for the museum, said the reaction from visitors has been extremely positive.
"Captain Tsubasa" was first published in Shukan Shonen Jump weekly in 1981 and follows the story of the football prodigy along with his teammates and rivals, and his growth as a player. The work has been adapted into anime and games.
"Captain Tsubasa" ended its run in the manga format in 2024. The comic sold over 90 million copies in Japan.
Former Japan national team star Hidetoshi Nakata and Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi are among players who have said they were inspired by "Captain Tsubasa."
