TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Former Japan goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda has joined Debrecen, the Hungarian club said Monday.

The 36-year-old was part of Japan's 2014 World Cup squad in Brazil and played in all of their four games at the 2022 tournament in Qatar where they reached the round of 16.

"This challenge to me is very important because I want to play in the next World Cup," the veteran said on Debrecen's official website.

Debrecen will be Gonda's third club overseas after previously featuring for SV Horn in Austria and Portimonense in Portugal. He left Shimizu S-Pulse at the end of last season after helping them win promotion to the J-League first division.
