Tokyo stocks open higher on bargain-hunting, US Dow index gains

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Tuesday, lifted by buying following plunges the previous day and a rise of the U.S. Dow Jones index overnight.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 312.70 points, or 0.88 percent, from Monday to 35,930.26. The broader Topix index was up 29.53 points, or 1.11 percent, at 2,688.26.
On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by real estate, mining, and electric power and gas issues.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 149.93-95 yen compared with 149.92-150.02 yen in New York and 149.13-15 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Monday.
The euro was quoted at $1.0816-0819 and 162.16-23 yen against $1.0809-0819 and 162.11-21 yen in New York and $1.0831-0832 and 161.53-57 yen in Tokyo late Monday afternoon.
