TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Nintendo Co. announced Wednesday that it will release the Switch 2 game console on June 5, unveiling details of the long-awaited successor to the original device for the first time in an online video.

A short time later, Nintendo said in a statement that the new console will be priced at 49,980 yen ($334) for a Japanese-only version of the machine. The multilanguage system will be available for 69,980 yen.

Users can play titles exclusive to the new console, as well as games available in both physical and digital formats for the current Switch. The Switch functions as both a portable device and a stationary console that can connect to a TV.

New software announced for release on the console's launch day includes "Mario Kart World," the latest installment in the popular racing series.

The console features a larger 1080p LCD screen with roughly twice the pixel count of the original Switch and can play compatible software in 4K on televisions. The screen size has been increased to 7.9 inches, up from 6.2 inches on the first model.

Upgrades to the Joy-Con controllers allow them to function like computer mice. The console also features a new button for connecting players online, enabling screen sharing and voice chat through a built-in microphone.

The new console comes as its predecessor suffers from declining sales, having been on the market for over eight years. Nintendo's net profit for the nine months through December dropped 41.9 percent from a year earlier to 237.19 billion yen as the device loses popularity.

Still, the Switch has become one of the best-selling consoles of the Kyoto-based firm since the launch of the device in March 2017, with more than 150 million units sold.

Prior to Wednesday's announcement, Nintendo unveiled an image and video preview of the Switch 2 in January. The Japanese company said it will host events across the globe to give consumers a hands-on experience with the new console.
