BEIJING (Kyodo) -- China said Friday it will slap an additional 34 percent tariff on all U.S. imports next week as a tit-for-tat measure following U.S. President Donald Trump's trade initiative that will raise the total extra U.S. duties on Chinese goods to 54 percent.
Beijing's retaliatory measure will be implemented next Thursday, the Customs Tariff Commission of China's State Council said, further escalating frictions between the world's two largest economies in a global trade war launched by Trump since his nonconsecutive second term began in January.
China has also filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization over the fresh U.S. tariff hike, the Asian country's Commerce Ministry said, adding Beijing has introduced export control measures on seven types of rare-earth minerals, including samarium, gadolinium, terbium and dysprosium, that took effect immediately.
The ministry expressed Beijing's "firm opposition" to the new U.S. tariff increase, saying it is "a typical unilateral practice of bullying that jeopardizes the stability of the global economic and trade order."
The U.S. reciprocal tariff "gravely violates WTO rules, seriously undermines the legitimate rights and interests of WTO members and seriously damages the rules-based multilateral trading system," the ministry added.
The export curbs on Chinese rare-earth elements were meant to "better safeguard national security and interests," and it is a common international practice to restrict shipments of materials that have both military and civilian uses, the ministry said.
Furthermore, Beijing said it has added 11 U.S. firms including drone manufacturers to its list of "unreliable entities" that will be subject to sanctions, due to their alleged military technology cooperation with Taiwan.
The Asian powerhouse also said it has launched a probe into the Chinese unit of U.S. chemical firm DuPont over its suspected violation of the nation's anti-monopoly law.
Following the announcement of Beijing's retaliatory steps, Trump said in a social media post, "China played it wrong, they panicked."
Washington recently imposed an additional 20 percent tariff on all Chinese imports, accusing Beijing of not doing enough to clamp down on the flow of illicit drugs into the United States. On Wednesday, Trump unveiled a further 34 percent tariff hike on Chinese goods as part of U.S. global reciprocal duties.
China has already hit back with measures such as additional tariffs of up to 15 percent on U.S. liquefied natural gas, coal, agricultural machinery and large-displacement fuel automobiles as well as a wide range of American farm imports.
From next Thursday, Beijing will impose an additional 34 percent tariff on all U.S. imports "on top of the current applicable tariff rates," the Chinese ministry said.
