YOKOHAMA (Kyodo) -- Undisputed super bantamweight boxing champion Naoya Inoue said Saturday he is looking to impress the crowd in Las Vegas when he takes on Ramon Cardenas of the United States on May 4.
"I'm excited," the Japanese star, nicknamed "Monster," told a press conference in Yokohama. "Since I fight in the United States, I want to think about a knockout. But even if it's a win by decision, I want to put on a show."
Inoue will fight in the United States for the first time since June 2021, when he knocked out Michael Dasmarinas of the Philippines in the third round of their bantamweight title match.
On Cardenas, ranked first by the World Boxing Association, Inoue said, "He is an all-around fighter. He throws excellent lead punches and is very tough."
On May 4, ESPN plans to broadcast Inoue's match, the main event of the day at T-Mobile Arena, after a baseball game between Shohei Ohtani's Los Angeles Dodgers and the Atlanta Braves.
"(With Ohtani) I want to show the greatness and strength of Japanese athletes," Inoue said.
