TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Bank of Japan chief Kazuo Ueda on Wednesday voiced wariness over tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, saying they are intensifying uncertainty about the Asian country's economy and prices.
The central bank will "closely monitor" the impact of the levies on domestic industries and consumption, Ueda said in a parliamentary committee, adding the BOJ will make an "appropriate" decision on whether to raise its key policy rate further to curb inflation.
Trump has pledged to impose reciprocal tariffs effective Wednesday, targeting about 60 nations and regions whose trade balances he claims need to be rectified. Japan will be hit with a 24 percent duty.
The BOJ, which has been aiming to normalize monetary policy after years of unorthodox easing, is slated to hold a two-day meeting from April 30. In January, the bank lifted its policy rate to 0.5 percent, the highest level in 17 years, from around 0.25 percent.
