AUGUSTA, Georgia (Kyodo) -- An unlucky double-bogey on the 13th spoiled a solid first round for Hideki Matsuyama at the Masters Tournament on Thursday, with the Japanese carding a 1-over 73 to sit in a tie for 38th.
England's Justin Rose jumped out to a three-stroke lead with a 65, leading reigning champion Scottie Scheffler of the United States, Corey Conners of Canada and Ludvig Aberg of Sweden who are tied for second at 4-under.
Matsuyama managed just two birdies on the day, at the seventh and eighth holes, against one bogey and the double-bogey.
The 2021 Masters champion from Japan was 1-under for the day through the 12th hole.
On the par-5 13th, his third shot from 80 yards hit the flagstick and rolled off the green into the water. Instead of standing over a short birdie putt, Matsuyama re-hit the approach and eventually took a seven.
"I was like, oh no," the 11-time winner on the PGA Tour said of his heartbreaking approach shot. He also missed a birdie putt of about four feet on the 18th hole.
"I wanted to play a little better. I'm disappointed with the result. I'll just try my best to get more birdies," Matsuyama said.
Bryson DeChambeau of the United States shot a 69 that left him in a two-way tie for fifth. Rory McIlroy opened with a 72 in his bid to complete a career Grand Slam, but double bogeys on the 15th and 17th holes cost the player from Northern Ireland dearly.
