NEW YORK (Kyodo) -- Japanese national basketball team standout Yuki Kawamura wrapped up his NBA rookie season Sunday with 12 points, five assists and five rebounds in a career-high 28 minutes for the Memphis Grizzlies in their 132-97 win against the Dallas Mavericks.
The Grizzlies finished the regular season eighth in the Western Conference and will contest the play-in tournament to determine the seventh and eighth playoff seeds without Kawamura, whose two-way contract makes him ineligible for the postseason.
With coach Tuomas Iisalo resting his regular rotation players, Kawamura seized the opportunity to play a bigger role in front of the home crowd at FedExForum.
"I wanted to bring energy to the team and did what I could," Kawamura said.
The 173-centimeter guard brought the fans to their feet with a highlight play in the second quarter, stealing the ball, then launching a no-look overhead pass from beyond halfcourt to Marvin Bagley III for a transition dunk.
Kawamura connected on three of his seven three-point attempts, including a successful four-point play in the third quarter, while relishing the atmosphere of the regular-season finale.
"It was awesome," he said.
Memphis will face the seventh-place Golden State Warriors in the play-in tournament on Tuesday, with the winner earning the seventh playoff seed and the loser having one more shot at the eighth and final berth in the west.
While Kawamura will not play, he hopes to contribute while traveling and practicing with the team.
"I want to support my teammates as their practice opponent," he said.
Kawamura's Japan national teammate Rui Hachimura sat out the last regular-season game for the Los Angeles Lakers, who had already clinched the third seed in the west and will battle the sixth-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves in the opening round of the playoffs.
