CESKE BUDEJOVICE, Czech Republic (Kyodo) -- Rui Ukita scored the only goal as Japan saw off Germany 1-0 to finish second in Group B at the women's ice hockey world championship on Tuesday, setting up a quarterfinal clash with Canada.
Ukita scored six minutes into the second period in Ceske Budejovice in the Czech Republic and world No. 7 Japan, which lost forward Akane Shiga late in the first period, held on to the lead against ninth-ranked Germany.
Japan got revenge on the Europeans after its 4-1 defeat at the same tournament last year. Group B winner Sweden and third-placed Germany joined Japan in making the last eight.
Japan will take on Canada, Group A runner-up, on Thursday in a bid to reach the semifinals at the worlds for the first time.
