A music label in Kagoshima, southwestern Japan, has sparked controversy by announcing that it will release a CD featuring the late singer Aki Yashiro, who died in December 2023, accompanied by a set of "full nude photos" of her.
Gov. Takashi Kimura of Kumamoto Prefecture, where Yashiro was born, criticized the move at an April 16 press conference, saying, "It's unacceptable. The release should be canceled."
The company announced the plan on its website to release a CD containing 10 songs, including the hits "Funauta" and "Ame no Bojo," on April 21. It explained that two nude photos of Yashiro, taken by an individual she lived with in her 20s, will be included as "treasures."
In response, Gov. Kimura stated at the press conference, "If true, this is an extremely unpleasant and intolerable act." He emphasized the importance of respecting Yashiro and her family's dignity, adding, "This matter should not be sensationalized for curiosity, leading to profits for the business planning the CD's sale. I believe the release should be canceled."
The CD's planned release has also faced criticism on social media, with an online petition calling for its cancellation.
The music label told the Mainichi Shimbun April 16, "We cannot respond to interviews." On Instagram, the company claims ownership of the photos and stated, "We will not cancel the release."
