TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Three-time World Baseball Classic champion Japan will play exhibition games against rival South Korea on Nov. 15 and 16 at Tokyo Dome, organizers said Thursday.
The games are likely to be Japan's last ones against another national team before the sixth edition of the tournament in March 2026.
"We'll play very important games with an eye on the WBC," Japan's manager Hirokazu Ibata said at a press conference in Tokyo.
"It's a great opportunity for me to see how much players other than those in the major leagues will have developed after a season."
On the selection of major leaguers for Japan, including Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani, Ibata said he does not want to disturb them until the season is over.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Wednesday he intends to support players wishing to take part in the WBC.
New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge has been named the United States' captain for the tournament.
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout and New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor have expressed their readiness to play for the United States and Puerto Rico, respectively.
In Pool C play starting March 5 at Tokyo Dome, Japan will begin its title defense on March 6 against Premier12 champion Taiwan.
Japan will face South Korea and Australia on the following two days before wrapping up the round-robin stage on March 10 against the Czech Republic.
Japan won the inaugural 2006, 2009 and 2023 WBCs.
