TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks were almost flat early Tuesday as selling after Wall Street plunged overnight was offset by buying of shares sensitive to domestic demand.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 11.30 points, or 0.03 percent, from Monday to 34,291.22. The broader Topix index was up 3.21 points, or 0.13 percent, at 2,532.14.
On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by pulp and paper, wholesale trade, and electric power and gas issues.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 140.87-88 yen compared with 140.83-93 yen in New York and 140.55-57 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Monday.
The euro was quoted at $1.1513-1516 and 162.18-24 yen against $1.1506-1516 and 162.18-28 yen in New York and $1.1554-1557 and 162.41-45 yen in Tokyo late Monday afternoon.
