WASHINGTON (Kyodo) -- U.S. President Donald Trump will leave Friday for Rome to attend the funeral of Pope Francis, with the trip marking his first foreign visit since taking office about three months ago, the White House said.

Its spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt also said Tuesday that Trump will visit Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates from May 13 to 16.

Saudi Arabia was initially supposed to be his first overseas destination in his second term, but Trump announced Monday that he will attend the funeral at the end of the week with first lady Melania Trump.

For the funeral, Leavitt said Trump will depart Washington on Friday morning and return to the United States on Saturday evening.

During a press briefing, she said Trump looks forward to strengthening U.S. relationships with the countries he plans to visit and that he will have "many bilateral meetings," without providing details.
