Tokyo stocks open higher after US Dow Jones rise

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Thursday, tracking an overnight rise on the U.S. Dow Jones index as hopes grew the Federal Reserve may cut interest rate cuts sooner than expected.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 225.55 points, or 0.63 percent, from Wednesday to 36,270.93. The broader Topix index was up 6.13 points, or 0.23 percent, at 2,673.42.
On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by land transportation, glass and ceramics product, and pharmaceutical issues.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 143.01-02 yen compared with 143.00-10 yen in New York and 142.79-82 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The euro was quoted at $1.1322-1324 and 161.92-96 yen against $1.1324-1334 and 162.04-14 yen in New York and $1.1376-1378 and 162.45-49 yen in Tokyo late Wednesday afternoon.
