ANAHEIM, California (Kyodo) -- The Detroit Tigers said Thursday they have designated veteran right-hander Kenta Maeda for assignment.
The 37-year-old from Japan has posted a 0-0 record with a 7.88 ERA in seven relief appearances in the final season of his two-year, $24 million deal with the Tigers and his 10th year in the major leagues.
The Tigers called up Tyler Owens, a 24-year-old right-handed reliever, to take Maeda's spot on the roster.
Last year, Maeda went 3-7 with a 6.09 ERA in 29 games, 17 of them starts.
The former Hiroshima Carp ace is 35 wins shy of 200 for his combined career in Nippon Professional Baseball and Major League Baseball.
Maeda has already left the Tigers, who are in Anaheim, California, for the four-game series against the Los Angeles Angels.
