TOKYO -- The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and the Ministry of the Environment have issued a "heatstroke alert" for Chiba, Ibaraki, Wakayama and Kagoshima prefectures, as well as wide areas of Okinawa Prefecture on June 17, predicting dangerously high temperatures in these areas. They are urging people to take precautions including using air conditioning, and hydrating and replenishing salt regularly.
According to the JMA, temperatures rose across the country on June 16, with 22 observation locations recording an "extremely hot day" -- when the mercury hits 35 degrees Celsius or above -- and 417 locations experiencing a "hot summer day" -- when the maximum temperature is at least 30 C -- by 5 p.m. The temperature in the western Japan city of Saijo, Ehime Prefecture, reached 36.5 C. Central Tokyo recorded 31.6 C, marking the highest temperature of the year so far.
Kosuke Mori, a weather forecaster from the Japan Weather Association, noted that the Pacific high-pressure system is expected to strengthen over June 17 and 18, leading to sunny conditions across a wide area. Warm air will envelop Japan's main island of Honshu, with severe heat expected in the Kanto-Koshin and Tokai regions. The Kanto-Koshin area, affected by the foehn phenomenon, is expected to see extremely hot days, particularly in inland areas such as Gunma and Saitama prefectures.
