BUDAPEST (Kyodo) -- Japanese judoka Haruka Kaju won the women's 63-kilogram gold medal in her world championships debut Monday in Budapest.
The 25-year-old Kaju claimed an extra-time, yusei victory in the final over Canada's Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard, a bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
Kaju became the second Japanese woman to earn gold at the championships in the Hungarian capital, joining Uta Abe, who won Saturday's 52-kg event.
Two-time Olympic champion and Japanese compatriot Takanori Nagase suffered a shock first-round exit in the men's 81-kilogram category won by Russian judoka Timur Arbuzov, who was fighting as an individual neutral athlete.
