TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Vissel Kobe forward Taisei Miyashiro and Kawasaki Frontale striker Shin Yamada were among the first-time call-ups as Japan manager Hajime Moriyasu named an entirely domestic-based 26-man squad Thursday for the upcoming East Asian Football Federation E-1 Championship in South Korea.
Overseas-based players were overlooked for the tournament, which falls outside a FIFA-set international window, with veteran Yuto Nagatomo and 18-year-old Ryunosuke Sato among the five selections who took part in World Cup qualifiers last month.
Japan will face Hong Kong on Tuesday, China on July 12 and South Korea four days later in a round-robin as Moriyasu looks to uncover new talents ahead of the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
"I've named wonderful players who I had wanted to call up before, but found it quite difficult," he said. "We'll try our best looking to develop both as individuals and a team and raise Japan's standard."
Twelve players in total won their first Samurai Blue call-ups, while returnees include Machida Zelvia attackers Takuma Nishimura and Yuki Soma.
Japan squad:
Goalkeepers: Tomoki Hayakawa (Kashima Antlers), Keisuke Osako (Sanfrecce Hiroshima), Alexandre Kouto Horio Pisano (Nagoya Grampus)
