TOKYO (Kyodo) -- A record-high 75.3 percent of respondents in a Bank of Japan survey released Monday said they felt prices have risen "significantly" from a year earlier, reflecting persistent inflation of food and other daily necessities.
Including those who answered the prices have gone up "slightly," the share of respondents who believed prices have risen stood at 96.1 percent, unchanged from the record high logged in the previous survey in March, according to the study on the public's views and behavior.
Regarding the outlook for prices a year from now, 85.1 percent said they expect them to rise, against 86.7 percent in March. The rate of increase projected by the respondents stood at 12.8 percent on average, up from 12.2 percent in the previous survey.
Rising prices have negatively affected perceptions of household conditions. Of the surveyed, 61.0 percent said their household circumstances had worsened over the past year, up from 55.9 percent, while only 3.8 percent said they had improved, down from 3.9 percent.
Among those who said they were worse off, 93.7 percent pointed to rising prices as the main reason in a multiple-answer question, followed by 30.3 percent who cited decreased income.
The latest postal survey, conducted between May 1 and June 3, was mailed to 4,000 people aged 20 or older, with 50.4 percent of them giving valid responses.
A total of 70.5 percent of respondents said economic conditions had worsened compared with a year ago, while only 3.5 percent said they had improved.
When asked what influenced their impression of economic conditions, 42.8 percent cited income levels for themselves or family members, followed by 39.0 percent who pointed to media reports, in a question allowing up to two responses.
