DOHA (Kyodo) -- The Islamist militant group Hamas is reconsidering its negotiations with Israel on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, a senior member said, after Israel launched an attack on its delegation in Qatar.
In a recent rare interview with Kyodo News, Suhail al-Hindi of the political bureau of the Hamas group said that top negotiator Khalil al-Hayya and other leadership of the delegation were not harmed by the Sept. 9 attack but did not disclose further details.
"I believe there is no objection to continuing the negotiations, but perhaps with new mechanisms, methods, and concepts that differ from previous ones," al-Hindi said on Saturday in the Qatari capital of Doha.
Qatar has served as a mediator between Hamas and Israel, with senior Hamas officials based in the country. The Hamas delegation was in Qatar to discuss a ceasefire plan proposed by the United States, when Israel at the direction of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched the attack, which the group said killed five members.
As Israel continues to launch airstrikes on Gaza, the outlook for a peace deal remains uncertain. The war between Israel and Hamas has left many Palestinians displaced and facing famine, with the United Nations raising concerns about the worsening humanitarian crisis.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held talks with Netanyahu in Israel on Monday, underscoring the need for Hamas to disarm and release all hostages taken from Israel.
In the interview, al-Hindi said Israel has crossed "all red lines" with the recent strike, but Hamas will not cut off talks.
Asked about the future of Gaza, he said it should be ruled by Palestinian people. "Our goal is not to rule Gaza," he said.
