TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The Yomiuri Giants announced Wednesday they are allowing star infielder Kazuma Okamoto to pursue a move to Major League Baseball this offseason.
The 29-year-old slugger, who has long expressed his desire to play in the United States, will seek to join an MLB club via the posting system.
"It's the world's best competition. I've been working hard with the singular goal of playing there," Okamoto said at a press conference in Tokyo.
Okamoto asked the Giants to post him after they were eliminated in the Central League Climax Series first stage earlier this month.
While Yomiuri has traditionally not posted players for overseas moves, general manager Sadaaki Yoshimura said the Tokyo club wanted to help Okamoto achieve his career goal.
"We felt that the team would like to support and encourage him in pursuing his dream and give him the opportunity to try his luck," Yoshimura said.
A left elbow injury limited Okamoto to 69 games this season, but he nevertheless put up impressive numbers, including a batting average of .327 with 15 home runs and 49 RBIs.
He has racked up 1,089 hits, 248 home runs and 717 RBIs with a .277 average in 1,074 games for the Giants.
"This is one of the few times a Giants player has tried to move overseas via posting. I'm very grateful," said Okamoto, who is also a two-time Best Nine selection and three-time Golden Glove winner.
Okamoto debuted for the Giants in 2015 after they selected him with their first draft pick out of Chiben Gakuen High School in his home prefecture of Nara.
He has been a key figure at the club since cementing a regular starting spot in 2018, hitting 30 or more home runs for six consecutive years, while leading the CL in home runs three times and RBIs twice.
Okamoto also made key contributions for the victorious Samurai Japan team at the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
