TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan and Indonesia will hold ministerial security talks in Tokyo involving their foreign and defense chiefs next Monday, Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said Friday, amid China's increasing assertiveness in the East and South China seas.
During the so-called two-plus-two meeting, Koizumi and Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi will meet with their counterparts, Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Sugiono, and plan to reaffirm cooperation in maritime security.
It will be the nations' third two-plus-two meeting. The countries last held their talks in March 2021, following the inaugural one in December 2015.
Referring to Japan and Indonesia as "maritime countries," Koizumi said at a press conference that the Southeast Asian country is an "indispensable partner in strengthening defense cooperation."
He added he will invite his Indonesian counterpart to visit the Maritime Self-Defense Force base in Yokosuka.
Japan and Indonesia will also hold separate meetings between their defense ministers and foreign ministers, according to the Japanese Defense Ministry.
Indonesia, known for its "free and active" foreign policy under which it maintains a balance in its relations with rival nations, held a two-plus-two meeting with China in April this year.
Japan sees Indonesia as one of the key comprehensive and strategic partners due largely to the size of its economy and population.
