HATSUKAICHI, Hiroshima -- The leaves of maple trees have begun turning red and yellow at Momijidani Park on the island of Miyajima here, known as the location of the World Heritage-listed Itsukushima Shrine, delighting the eyes of visitors.
Located about a 10-minute walk from Itsukushima Shrine, the park is renowned for its autumn foliage, featuring around 700 trees, including Japanese maples known as "iroha kaede" and "oo momiji."
On Nov. 16, a perfect day for outings, families and foreign tourists enjoyed the varied hues of the autumn leaves, which change with the sunlight, and watched deer drinking from the pond, capturing the scenes on their smartphones as they relished the brief autumn holiday.
The autumn foliage at the park is expected to reach its peak in late November. The trees will be illuminated from sunset until 9 p.m. daily through Nov. 30.
