TOKYO -- Three men accused of burning an acquaintance with an ignited spray, hitting him, stealing his TV then leaving him outside nearly naked in suburban Tokyo have been arrested, police said on Nov. 18.
The trio including 28-year-old Takeru Yamamoto, a self-employed resident of Wako, Saitama Prefecture, and two others in their 20s were arrested on suspicion of robbery resulting in injury and unlawful capture and confinement.
The incident apparently erupted due to trouble between those involved, and the victim suffered injuries requiring about a week's treatment.
The suspects are accused of attacking and confining the victim, an unemployed resident of the suburban Tokyo city of Tachikawa in his 20s, at his home between about 1:10 p.m. and 6:50 p.m. on Sept. 23 this year. They allegedly sprayed an insecticide at him and ignited it with a lighter, leaving him with burns on his abdomen. They are also suspected of repeatedly hitting him in the face and threatened him, telling him, "If you don't do as you're told, we'll kill you," and stole nine items from him including a TV, game console and smartphone with a combined value of about 57,000 yen (roughly $370). They then allegedly forced him into the trunk of a car and took him to the city of Hino, also in suburban Tokyo.
According to Hino Police Station, the four had become acquainted through a part time job and elsewhere and had been arguing over money and interactions on social media.
After the victim was taken from his home, he was forced to put on women's underwear and was released on a riverbank.
Police stated that Yamamoto has admitted to the allegations. The other two were quoted as saying, "I didn't assault him. The friends with me went too far," and "We got permission to take the TV."
