NAHA (Kyodo) -- A massive water leak occurred in the northern part of Okinawa on Monday, potentially leading to outages in 17 of the prefecture's 41 municipalities and affecting up to 370,000 households, the local government said.
A rupture occurred in a nearly 60-year-old water pipe in Ogimi between a dam and a water treatment facility, it said.
According to the prefectural government, all areas of 11 municipalities and parts of six additional municipalities are at risk of water outages.
It will take until Tuesday to fully resume water supply to affected areas using an alternate water line, the Okinawa Prefectural Enterprise Bureau said.
The pipe that broke was installed in 1967, according to the prefecture.
