HIROSHIMA -- Hiroshima City University here has begun publishing its extensive collection of artworks and academic resources online, digitizing materials held by its art museum and Hiroshima Peace Institute.
Users can search the new website by genre, artist or title, enabling broader access to the art and peace archives accumulated since the university's founding about 30 years ago.
The Hiroshima City University Digital Archives, accessible from the university's website, integrates both institutions' collections and will continue to be updated with new material.
The art museum, opened in 1994 and home to about 1,400 pieces, allows archive searches across 11 categories including painting, sculpture, block print, contemporary art and photography. Site visitors can also view student graduation works. "The Light -Portraits of The Hibakusha-" series (2004 to 2015) -- representations of atomic-bomb survivors and their families -- includes accompanying stories from the time the portraits were painted.
The Hiroshima Peace Institute, established in 1998, has drawn on its spring 2025 publication "Introduction to Hiroshima: Survey and Research" to present resources for studying the atomic bombing and peace. The site introduces related research facilities, memorial services and inheritance activities in Hiroshima, and features maps listing each topic. Catalogs of about 50 photo albums of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the institute's bulletin are also searchable.
A free commemorative exhibition demonstrating how to access the archive and view materials on digital terminals is being held at the university's art museum through March 9.
