LOS ANGELES (Kyodo) -- Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani will sit out the upcoming All-Star Game due to continued irritation in his left knee, while Chicago White Sox slugger Munetaka Murakami has been added to the American League roster, their clubs said Friday.
The 32-year-old Ohtani had been named to the National League's starting lineup after topping the fan ballot for the first time and was set to start his sixth consecutive Midsummer Classic at designated hitter.
"I feel bad for the people who voted for me," Ohtani told reporters after Friday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. "It's disappointing to have to withdraw after being chosen."
He also missed his scheduled start on the mound on Friday but hit a home run batting leadoff as designated hitter.
Ohtani is expected to keep appearing in the batter's box throughout the ongoing series at Dodger Stadium before receiving treatment over the All-Star break.
Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts said Ohtani will have his knee drained on Sunday and need four days to recover before the Dodgers open the second half against the New York Yankees on July 17.
Roberts also said that the injury would not affect Ohtani's ability to pitch after the All-Star break, though the team has yet to decide his spot in the rotation.
Ohtani's teammate and reigning World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto was named to the NL roster for the second year in a row, but the right-hander may not appear in Tuesday's game at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia following his scheduled start on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Murakami, who was activated from the injured list Friday following a right hamstring strain, was named to the AL All-Star roster as a replacement for Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton.
The 26-year-old rookie was also added to the eight-player field for the Home Run Derby, becoming the second Japanese player to participate in the event, joining Ohtani, who competed in 2021 while a member of the Los Angeles Angels.
