TOKYO (Kyodo) -- A hydrogen hybrid train will enter service on some lines at the end of fiscal 2027, marking the first deployment in Japan of this type of environmentally friendly vehicle, operator East Japan Railway Co. said Tuesday.

Equipped with fuel cells and storage batteries, the "Hybari" train is powered by electricity generated through the chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen, emitting no carbon dioxide in the process. It can travel about 70 kilometers on a single hydrogen refill.

The train will run on the Tsurumi and Nambu lines in Kanagawa Prefecture near Tokyo, the operator known as JR East said, adding that further details will be announced later.

JR East has been testing the train's performance and operational stability since 2022 as it aims to increase the use of renewable energy and cut CO2 emissions.
