TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks rose Tuesday morning, with the Nikkei stock index briefly climbing over 2 percent following a plunge late last week, prompted by gains among semiconductor-related shares.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 1,114.56 points, or 1.74 percent, from Friday to 65,255.68. The broader Topix index was up 72.08 points, or 1.84 percent, at 3,991.29.
Japanese financial markets were closed Monday for a national holiday.
The U.S. dollar traded in the mid-162 yen level in Tokyo as tensions between the United States and Iran intensified, with U.S. President Donald Trump warning of revenge following the deaths of three U.S. soldiers.
At noon, the dollar fetched 162.48-50 yen compared with 162.43-53 yen in New York at 5 p.m. Monday.
The euro was quoted at $1.1412-1412 and 185.42-44 yen against $1.1410-1420 and 185.43-53 yen in New York late Monday afternoon.
A broad range of issues rose after the Nikkei index shed more than 4,600 points over two trading days last week, while chip-related shares, which had been recent decliners, followed their U.S. counterparts higher.
However, the upward momentum remained relatively limited, dealers said, as tensions in the Middle East weighed on investor sentiment after Trump posted on social media that Iran "will pay for that killing many times over."
