TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The Nikkei stock index ended up over 3 percent Tuesday following a plunge late last week, as buying was prompted by gains in semiconductor-related shares, which had been a recent decliner.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 2,091.07 points, or 3.26 percent, from Friday at 66,232.19. The broader Topix index finished 95.74 points, or 2.44 percent, higher at 4,014.95.
Japanese financial markets were closed Monday for a national holiday.
On the top-tier Prime Market, the main gainers were mining, oil and coal products and insurance issues.
The U.S. dollar mostly traded in the mid-162 yen level in Tokyo as tensions between the United States and Iran intensified, with President Donald Trump vowing to avenge the deaths of three U.S. soldiers.
At 5 p.m., the dollar fetched 162.59-60 yen compared with 162.43-53 yen in New York at 5 p.m. Monday.
The euro was quoted at $1.1422-1424 and 185.72-76 yen against $1.1410-1420 and 185.43-53 yen in New York late Monday afternoon.
The yield on the benchmark 10-year Japanese government bond ended up 0.015 percentage point from Friday's close at 2.720 percent, as the debt was bought on inflation concerns following rises in crude oil prices.
Most sectors rose after the Nikkei index shed more than 4,600 points over two trading days last week, while chip-related shares followed their U.S. counterparts higher.
The rise in South Korea's tech-heavy benchmark Kospi index also supported investor sentiment, amid a declining trend in artificial intelligence- and semiconductor-related shares on overheating concerns.
"Although it should take another one or two days to figure out whether the rebound is full-scale or not, there is a possibility that the speed adjustment is close to ending," said Masahiro Ichikawa, chief market strategist at Sumitomo Mitsui DS Asset Management Co.
Meanwhile, tensions in the Middle East briefly pressured the market following Trump's post on social media that Iran "will pay for that killing many times over."
