WASHINGTON (Kyodo) -- U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday he will discuss artificial intelligence with Chinese President Xi Jinping at their next in-person meeting in September in Washington.

"I've always said that America's goal must be to dominate the future, and that includes being the number one superpower in artificial intelligence," Trump said during a Washington event announcing an initiative toward protecting Americans from higher electricity bills stemming from the fast growth of AI data centers.

"We're leading China. We want to keep it that way," Trump said. "President Xi is coming over on September 24th, and we talked about it when I was over in Beijing, and we'll be talking about it again."

On Thursday, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt suggested that China's alleged stealing of AI technology from American companies will likely be high on the upcoming summit's agenda.

"There is always a wide range of topics that come up. I would imagine this would be something that's of high importance to the president and this administration," Leavitt said at a press briefing, when asked about the allegation.

Their remarks came a day after the United States accused China's Moonshot AI startup of stealing technology from Anthropic's most advanced model, Claude Fable 5.

Michael Kratsios, the top White House technology adviser, said in an X post on Wednesday that the United States has information indicating that Moonshot had "distilled" Fable 5 to support the development of the Beijing-based company's newly released Kimi K3 model.

The U.S. accusation came despite easing tensions between Washington and Beijing, and even as senior officials have been advancing preparations for the summit at the White House.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Manila this week to lay the groundwork for what he said should be "a very positive visit" by Xi.

In mid-May, Trump visited Beijing and agreed with Xi to stabilize the U.S.-China relationship, despite friction over numerous issues. At the time, Trump also offered to host Xi at the White House on Sept. 24.
