WASHINGTON (Kyodo) -- U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on Thursday held online discussions with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng to prepare for a planned summit between the two countries' leaders in September.

Bessent said in an X post that he stressed the importance of China fully adhering to its commitments on rare earths and American farm products during the conversation with He, the point man for Beijing's negotiations with Washington on trade and investment.

China's official media said the three held a video call and had "candid, in-depth, and constructive" discussions regarding deals struck by Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump in mid-May in Beijing.

The state-run media said the Chinese side also expressed "serious concern" over recent U.S. economic and trade restrictions on China.

Last week, Trump's administration imposed new tariffs of either 10 percent or 12.5 percent on goods from its top 60 trading partners, including China, Japan and the European Union, accusing them of failing to stop imports of goods made with forced labor.

Bessent added in the social media post that the trio discussed new U.S.-China trade and investment forums as "a mechanism to secure concrete progress toward a more balanced, fair and constructive" economic relationship between the two countries.

During the previous summit, Trump and Xi agreed to stabilize the U.S.-China relationship and meet in person again by the end of the year, despite the overarching geopolitical rivalry.

Trump is scheduled to hold the next round of talks with Xi on Sept. 24 at the White House.
