TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks climbed Thursday, with the Topix ending at an all-time high, led by shares related to artificial intelligence and semiconductors as the release of the U.S. consumer price index for July eased inflation concerns.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 784.53 points, or 1.16 percent, from Wednesday at 68,308.59. The broader Topix index finished 37.04 points, or 0.89 percent, higher at 4,176.04, after hitting an intraday high of 4,185.68.
On the top-tier Prime Market, the main gainers were bank, glass and ceramics and electric appliance issues.
The U.S. dollar traded narrowly, mostly in the lower 159 yen range in Tokyo, amid a lack of trading cues after the release of the U.S. consumer price index.
Stocks tracked advances by their U.S. counterparts as investors grew more confident that the Federal Reserve would not raise interest rates in September, after the U.S. price data showed a slowdown in growth for the second consecutive month following weaker-than-expected U.S. nonfarm payrolls for July released last week.
The benchmark Nikkei index regained the 68,000 mark for the first time in about a month, with heavyweight technology shares such as Advantest and Tokyo Electron leading the gains.
Trading was not active in the afternoon as investors stayed on the sidelines ahead of the release of the U.S. Producer Price Index.
"Key economic data will be released at the end of this month and early next month, and if expectations for the Fed's interest rate hikes recede after their release, that would be positive for the stock market," said Maki Sawada, strategist in the Investment Content Department of Nomura Securities Co.
