TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Typhoon Dujuan was southeast of the Japanese archipelago on Thursday and moving on a northerly path that appeared likely to bring it toward the eastern region that includes Tokyo around Monday, according to the weather agency.
The Japan Meteorological Agency warned the public of possible high waves, strong winds and landslides as the season's 25th typhoon approaches from the Pacific, likely disrupting holiday plans for many.
After passing through the remote Ogasawara Islands, Dujuan is forecast to move north, possibly approaching the Izu Islands, which lie just south of the main island of Honshu, around Sunday.
The agency said the typhoon may approach the Kanto region around Monday before weakening into an extratropical low-pressure system east of Japan. It cautioned, however, that the storm's projected path is far from certain.
Japan will enter a five-day holiday period from Saturday, with Monday marking Respect for the Aged Day, a national holiday. An approaching typhoon could bring strong winds and heavy rain, potentially disrupting transportation during the busy travel period.
As of early Friday, the typhoon was off Minamitorishima, Japan's easternmost island, moving north-northwest at a speed of 40 kilometers per hour, with an atmospheric pressure of 985 hectopascals at its center.
