Cosmos flowers are seen in full bloom as a train on the JR Kashima Line passes in the background in Katori, Chiba Prefecture, Oct. 4, 2026. The flowers of about 3 million plants have reached their peak at the Yodaura Cosmos Festival, swaying in the autumn breeze. Some 3 hectares are painted in the reds, pinks and whites of the blossoms, which emerged all at once in October -- a late bloom. The late flowering was caused first by seeds planted in July not taking root, forcing another attempt the following month, and second by long rains and reduced sunshine through September. As a result, the festival period has been extended to Oct. 31. Visitors can also take part in free cosmos-picking experiences, and organizers are encouraging people to come.
