TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The operator of the Burger King hamburger chain in Japan on Thursday became the latest company to report a data breach, with 11.18 million customer records exposed through unauthorized access to a server managing data from its official smartphone app.
The leaked data includes users' names, dates of birth, email addresses, phone numbers and gender. BK Japan said it has not confirmed any fraudulent use of the information and is investigating the breach.
Credit card information is not stored by the company and was not compromised.
A spate of data breaches has hit Japanese companies in recent weeks, including the "Times Car" car-sharing service, East Japan Railway Co. and Yamaha Motor Co.
Major travel agency H.I.S. Co. said last week that customer passport information had been leaked late last year. The company said it became aware of the potential data breach in February but needed time to determine the extent of the damage.
