TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Prosecutors said Monday they have decided not to indict an Iranian man over his alleged involvement in the robbery of about 100 million yen ($720,000) from a cash transport car in Tokyo in 2001.

The man, who was deported from Japan for overstaying his visa shortly after the incident, was arrested in July this year at Kansai airport in Osaka Prefecture when he attempted to enter Japan with a counterfeit French passport.

Prosecutors did not provide a reason as to why they dropped the charges against the 51-year-old on Thursday.

He was suspected, along with two other Iranians, of shooting two security guards on Oct. 3, 2001 in front of an agricultural cooperative bank in Kodaira and taking cash and promissory notes before taking off in a car, police said. One of the guards was seriously wounded.

He had been put on an international wanted list along with one of the two accomplices, who is still sought by police. The remaining man was arrested in Japan in 2002.
