TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tyler Austin hit a tiebreaking solo homer as the underdog DeNA BayStars extended their unbeaten postseason run with a 2-1 victory over the Yomiuri Giants in Thursday's Game 2 of the Central League Climax Series final stage.
Moments after the Giants came back to tie it 1-1 in the sixth inning at Tokyo Dome, Austin led off the BayStars' seventh with a home run off veteran right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano.
On a 2-1 pitch, Sugano tried to come inside but missed over the plate, and the right-handed-hitting Austin, who had struck out twice, reached the seats in straight-away right.
"I put together some pretty bad at-bats early in the game, so I was just trying to get a good pitch and not miss it," said Austin, whose power is no mystery after he hit 25 home runs in the regular season.
The BayStars swept their best-of-three first stage on the road against the Hanshin Tigers and lead the six-game final stage 2-1, with the Giants' win coming from their one-game advantage as league champions.
Sugano allowed two runs on six hits and a walk over seven innings, with DeNA breaking the ice in the fifth on a leadoff double and a lucky bouncer that somehow got through the infield for an RBI single.
DeNA right-hander Shinichi Onuki held the Giants in check with some electric stuff until Louis Okoye doubled and scored on Kazuma Okamoto's booming sixth-inning RBI single. Onuki allowed one run on five hits and a walk while striking out seven over 6-2/3 innings.
In the Pacific League's final stage, Hotaka Yamakawa homered twice, and Kensuke Kondo hit a two-run shot to lead the PL champion SoftBank Hawks to a 7-2 Game 2 win over the Nippon Ham Fighters. SoftBank leads their series 3-0.
Because the higher-seeded team advances if a Climax Series stage ends in a tie, the Hawks can advance to the Japan Series with a win or a tie in Friday's Game 3.
