TAKAHATA, Yamagata (Kyodo) -- Masatora Kawano set a world record in the men's 35-kilometer race walk at the Japanese national championships Sunday.
The 26-year-old crossed in 2 hours, 21 minutes, 47 seconds in Takahata, Yamagata Prefecture, qualifying for the world athletics championships to be held in Tokyo in September 2025.
The 35-km race walk replaced the 50-km event as a standard world championship discipline in 2022. Masumi Fuchise won the women's 35 km in 2:52:38.
