BEIJING (Kyodo) -- China on Monday declined to comment on the results of Japan's general election a day earlier, calling it the neighboring country's internal affairs, but reiterated that it hopes for mutually beneficial and stable bilateral ties.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told a press conference that the long-term healthy and stable development of Sino-Japanese relations serves "the fundamental interests of the two peoples."
In Sunday's election, Japan's ruling bloc led by Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba lost its majority in the powerful House of Representatives.
Meanwhile, Taiwan's Foreign Ministry congratulated lawmakers friendly to the self-ruled democratic island on their reelection and expressed hope to strengthen cooperation with Japan for regional stability and prosperity.
