HIROSHIMA (Kyodo) -- Sanfrecce Hiroshima slipped up in their J-League first-division title pursuit Sunday with a 1-0 loss at home to Kyoto Sanga.
Kyoto midfielder Taiki Hirato's 62nd-minute strike secured the upset at Edion Peace Wing Hiroshima, where the second-place hosts were aiming to retake the J1 lead from defending champions Vissel Kobe.
The result leaves Michael Skibbe's men on 65 points after 35 rounds, two points adrift of Kobe, who moved to the top of the standings by beating relegation-threatened Jubilo Iwata on Friday.
Kyoto keeper Gakuji Ota made some big saves, while Hiroshima also hit the woodwork and side netting as they failed to capitalize on their greater possession.
Hirato curled in the winner against the run of play with his first touch from the edge of the area off a cross from right-back Shinnosuke Fukuda.
With three games left, Hiroshima have little margin for error as they bid for their first J1 crown since 2015.
"Our only choice is to get the job done," Skibbe said.
Third-place Machida Zelvia saw their hopes of a championship in their maiden J1 campaign fade further with a 2-1 loss to already-relegated Sagan Tosu.
Go Kuroda's men remain seven points back from Kobe after Tsubasa Terayama's late header got the result for the hosts at Ekimae Real Estate Stadium.
